When the forward looking sonar (FLS) is working at close quarters, both the near-field focused beamforming and the compensation of doppler effect caused by the moving platform will bring heavy computing load, and make it difficult for real-time processing.

Aiming at solving this question, REN Qiang, HUANG Yong, LIU Jiyuan of Institute of Acoustics, Chinese Academy of Sciences conducted a series of studies and brought forward a method for the doppler compensation of FLS on a moving platform—MDC.

This method combines the full doppler compensation (FDC) and half doppler compensation (HDC). FDC is an accurate compensation which also enjoys heavy computing load, while HDC is a relatively inaccurate one which needs much less computing load. MDC makes a balance between DOA estimation accuracy and time cost which is significant to the real-time processing of the FLS system. To justify the new method, they carried out simulation experiments and the result showed the validation of the method.
