Academicians

Wang Dezhao Academician Wang was born in Guanyun County, Jiangsu Province. He worked in the Physics Department of Beijing Normal University since his graduation in 1928. In 1934, he went to Langevin Laboratory, Paris to further his education and got his D.S degree from University of Paris six years later. At the end of 1956, he returned to China with the whole family in answer to Premier Zhou's summon of participating into socialist construction. Since then he has made his great efforts in many positions, such as general director of Equipment Bureau of CAS, the director of Isotope Separation Laboratory of Institute of Atomic Energy and the associate director of Institute of Electronics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IECAS) and so on. He was elected member of the Academic Division of Mathematics and Physics, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (academician) in 1957.

Ma Dayou  Academician Ma was born in Beijing in l9l5. He was the well-known physicist in our country. He graduated from Physics Department of Peking University in l936 and obtained a doctorate from Physics Department of Harvard University, USA in l940. He has been a professor of Institute of Acoustics, Chinese Academy of Science (IACAS) and the director of China National Technical Standardization Committee on Acoustics. He was elected member of the Academic Division of Mathematics and Physics, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (academician) in 1955 and senior academician in 1998. In more than 50 years' research life, Academician Ma was engaged in physical acoustics and architectural acoustics. He put forward the normal mode calculating formula and the room reverberation analysis method, which have become the landmark for architectural acoustics in our country.

Ying Chongfu  Academician Ying was born in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province in 1918. He is the founder of Ultrasonics in China. He graduated from Physics Department of Huazhong University in 1940 and graduated from Physics Department of Tsinghua University with his master degree in 1944. After graduation from America Brown University with his doctor degree, Academician Ying struggled to return to our homeland and found the first ultrasonic lab for our country. In 1993, he was elected member of the Academic Division of Mathematics and Physics, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (academician). His early papers on ultrasonic dispersion in solid materials have become the foundation for the later development of ultrasonics.

Zhang Renhe  Academician Zhang was born in Chongqing on Nov. 5, 1936. He graduated from Physics Department of Peking University in 1958. He is a research professor of Institute of Acoustics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IACAS) and director of State Key Laboratory of Acoustics. He was elected member of the Academic Division of Mathematics and Physics, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (academician) in 1991. Academician Zhang was the first to present the universal law about attenuation and group velocity of normal mode, which explained how the sound velocity structures and boundary conditions affected the sound field in shallow water.

Hou Chaohuan  Academician Hou was born in Zigong City, Sichuan Province on Sep.29, 1936. He graduated from Physics Department of Beijing University in 1958. He is a professor in digital signal processing and acoustics. He was elected member of the Academic Division of Science and Technology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (academician) in 1995. Academician Hou was the first to do the researches in VLSI signal processing and successfully integrate signal processing on a very high speed chip.

Li Qihu  Academician Li was born on Jul. 22, 1939 in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province. He graduated form the Digital Mechanics Department of Beijing University. He was appointed to be the fourth director of Institute of Acoustics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IACAS). He was elected member of the Academic Division of Science and Technology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (academician) in 1997. Based on his analysis of the features of acoustic propagation in shallow sea of our country, Academician Li innovatively applied the traditional methods and theories to solve the new problems related to underwater acoustic signal processing. His successful researches have made great contributions to the modernization of naval sonar.

Wang Chenghao  Academician Wang, the famous physicist, was born in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province. He graduated from the Physics Department of Peking University. He is the research professor of Institute of Acoustics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IACAS). He was elected member of the Academic Division of Mathematics and Physics, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (academician) in 2001. He established the generalized green function theory for surface excitation of piezoelectric crystal, which laid theoretic foundation for modern acoustic surface wave technology.
