On May 16, as part of the 11th public science day of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the Institute of Acoustics (IOA) opened its door to the public.

It aimed to popularize scientific knowledge, letting people get close to sciences and understand its latest research progress.

Two lectures were presented , named “Mysterious underwater world” and “Internet science”. They were using common languages and vivid images to display the physical essence of sound and the internet structure.

The lecture of the “Internet science” used the Wechat as example to demonstrate the internet message transmission procedure. Also, how the internet platforms, such as Taobao, Baidu, and Jingdong work were explained.

Acoustic deep-towed system model DTA-6000 and model of China's manned deep-sea research submersible Jiaolong also showed to everyone. Deputy chief designer of Jiaolong volunteered to introduce working principles of Jiaolong in plain words and answered questions raised by the pupils.

IOA exhibited its latest scientific research achievements, offering the public more knowledge about acoustics and science.

IOA attached importance to science communication and science education all long these years. Its staff innovated to make science approachable, letting people hear, see and learn science in an easy way.

By means of appointments or walk-in, almost one thousand tourists came to IOA, from many universities and middle and primary schools inside and outside Beijing, including CAS alumni, and students from the Peking University, the University of Science and Technology Beijing, the Beijing Institute of Technology and so on.
