(From Ultrasonic Physics and Exploration Laboratory) From the middle of July to the beginning of August, the scientific researchers from Institute of Acoustics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IACAS), who are responsible to Directional Sound Wave Imaging Logging Technique Research – Forward-looking Project of the National High-tech R&D Program of China (863 Program), came to RenQiu City, HeBei Province to do the field test. Braving the sweltering heat, they cooperated with each other and smoothly completed the test of Ultrasound Forward-looking Imaging logging device. The success of field test laid a firm foundation for the finally acceptance of the project.

"The Advanced Logging Technology and Equipment" project is the first 863 Program in the field of logging research in China. Led by China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) and China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec), the research team unites several top universities and institutes of China to form a research integration of production, education and research. There are five subjects in the project, which cover the most heated topics in the field of logging. IACAS is responsible to the Sound Wave Forward-looking Scan Measurement Research Project, which is a branch of the subject named Directional Sound Wave Imaging Logging Technique Research. Prof. ZHANG Hailan heads the project. The main task of the project is to study the technique of Sound Wave Forward-looking Scan Measurement in cased holes, use phased array technique, to develop Sound Wave Forward-looking Imaging monitor and evaluation technique, and finalize Sound Wave Forward-looking Imaging sample device and data acquisition and processing software, which will provide a support for work safety and enhancing the recovery of oil and gas in oil well.

Started from 2006, the Advanced Logging Technology and Equipment project lasted about 5 years. The acceptance of all the five subjects by the Science and Technology Ministry of China will be done at the end of 2010. In all previous project inspections, the expert group spoke highly of the work of IACAS, pointed out that the Sound Wave Forward-looking Scan Measurement technique was the most innovative work in the whole subject, and they hoped IACAS would keep up working in order to provide a basis of practicality.

IACAS has developed all the key techniques and the design of the device, which has met the requirement of the image index in lab. The field test in CNPC Logging North China Department in Renqiu City Hebei Province is a key step to verify whether the device satisfies the project targets. Scientific researchers from IACAS, LIN Weijun, He Hongbin, LIU lei, etc. have rushed to Renqiu City for three times. With the assistance of the leaders and engineers in CNPC Logging North China Department, Overcoming the difficulties of hot weather and long period of commissioning, they have gained ultrasound imaging with different objects fell into in experimental well. Eventually the field data of the device has met the requirement of image index. The completion of the field test lays a firm foundation of utilities of the Sound Wave Forward-looking Scan Measurement Technique.
