Doug Murray, from the famous Schlumberger Company and the Research Professor Liu Hong,  from Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences were invited to give reports in our institute on May. 11, 2007. The seminar was anchored by Prof. Wang Xiuming.

Dr. Doug's report was titled "Petroleum Related Borehole Acoustic Measurements and Applications". At the beginning of the report, he started from the introduction of the parameters used to describe petroleum deposit. And how to get these related parameters? By answering this question, he brought out his states on sound wave measurement. Then, he pointed out 4 aspects of sound wave measurement in petroleum production: seismic exploration, borehole seism, ultrasonic imaging and experimental measurement. The measurement results can be applied to the researches of physical geography, petrophysics, well completion, geomechanics and so on. In the last part of the report, he mentioned the development level of the related technology and some new possible applications.

After Dr. Doug's wonderful report, Professor Liu Hong gave us another interesting report titled "The Inversion Method of Three-dimension Wave Equation". Based on the Lie Algebra and Lie Group Integration, he put forward the Fast Computational Methods for Continuation Operator. Comparing to the traditional methods, this method is fast and accurate, which is of high application value. At last, Prof. Liu reviewed and summarized his reports in several keywords: Lie group integration, shrinking of the single-pass, variable-speed, quasidifferential, multiple scattering and so on.

After the seminar, the reporters had a warm discussion with the audience. The reports were vivid and impressive and let all the attendants benefit a lot.
