On May 3rd and 4th, researchers from the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and the Institute of Acoustics (IOA) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) ran workshop on acoustic metamaterials in IOA (Beijing).

In the opening, Prof. WANG Xiaomin, Director of IOA, and Mr. Welf Zöller, Representative of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft in China delivered speeches respectively, and signed strategic cooperation agreement.

In the following, Prof. YANG Jun, Director of the CAS Key Laboratory of Noise and Vibration Research made a brief introduction of IOA and the CAS Key Laboratory of Noise and Vibration Research, the organizer of this workshop.

The Institute for Building Physics (IBP) of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, the Fraunhofer-Institut fur Betriebsfestigkeit und Systemzuvelassigkeit LBF and the CAS Key Laboratory of Noise and Vibration Research researchers presented their research progress and findings respectively on the workshop.

IBP devoted themselves to changing the resonant frequency by acoustic metamaterials, which lead to the increase of sound transmission loss. It had made research progress of systems with frequency-dependent complex masses in 1D and 3D.

Meanwhile, the LBF intended to control the structure sound in low broadband frequency to achieve vibration isolation. As well, the CAS Key Laboratory of Noise and Vibration Research wanted to improve the performance of sound barrier in the low frequency by using acoustic metamaterials.

Future cooperation between the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and the IOA will concentrate on novel market-driven materials for noise and vibration control. The outcome is validated knowledge to design and manufacture acoustic metamaterials which possess outstanding acoustic qualities in line with market requirements.
