The 11th A3 foresight program “Ultra-Realistic Acoustic Interactive Communication on Next-Generation Internet”, also called “RIEC International Symposium on Ultra-Realistic Interactive Acoustic Communications 2016” was held on May 20 and 21, by the Research Institute of Electrical Communication (RIEC), Tohoku University.

Six Chinese participants from the Institute of Acoustics (IOA) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Beijing Institute of Technology attended this program.

Sponsored by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), and Korea Research Foundation (KRF), the purpose of the program is to support joint research and future collaborations conducted by researchers from China, Japan and Korea.

More than 60 professors, researchers and students attended this year’s A3 program. The program schedule included laboratory tour, keynote session, and poster session.

In the laboratory tour, participants visited laboratories in RIEC, such as the anechoic chamber, loudspeaker arrays, facilities for 3D sound technologies, etc. Several fantastic demos about virtual sound field reproduction were also showed in the tour.

Meanwhile, in the keynote session, invited speakers from different universities gave exciting reports in different topics, e.g., spatial sound perception, speech and music signal processing, speech synthesis, etc. Professor LI Junfeng from IOA also gave a talk entitled "3D Sound Technologies for Future Interactive Communications over the Internet" in the keynote session.

In the poster session, students and young researchers shared their recent research progress, initiating pleasant discussions among the participants.

This year’s program was the last one of the entire A3 project. Nevertheless, as the co-chair, YAN Yonghong from IOA said in the closing ceremony, although this was the last program, it did not mean the end of cooperation, on the contrary, this would be a new beginning.
