Prof. Jon Trevelyan and Dr Xuerui Mao from Durham University (UK) visited our institute on Mar. 24th. They were invited by Ultrasonic Physics and Exploration Laboratory director Prof. Xiuming Wang. Prof. Jon Trevelyan is the head of School of Engineering and Computing Sciences, and Dr Xuerui Mao is currently the lecturer in Fluid Mechanics and Turbomachinery.

During their visit, each of them gave a lecture focusing on their research areas. Prof. Trevelyan’s talk is entitled “Enrichment of boundary element and finite element approximations using non-polynomial functions”. He presented the use of the boundary element method (BEM) in various areas: enriched BEM algorithms for short wave propagation, enriched BEM algorithms for fracture mechanics, interactive stress analysis/re-analysis and topology optimisation.

Meanwhile, Dr. Mao had shared his research of optimal perturbations in fluid flow. The numerical algorithms to calculate optimal perturbations were introduced. And several examples in the context of both compressible flow and incompressible flow were given.

After two lectures, Ms. Ying Li of our institute hosted a discussion session for future cooperation possibilities between the two organisations.

Jon Trevelyan obtained his PhD from the University of Bristol in 1984, studying transfer function methods for the determination of the dynamic properties of arch dams. After working as a graduate engineer for Gibb, he joined the Computational Mechanics (CM) Group to work on commercial software based on the boundary element method. He stayed with CM for twelve years, seven of which were spent as Vice-President of CM, Inc. in Massachusetts, with responsibility for the operations of the group in North America, Canada and Mexico. In 1995, he returned to the UK and was appointed a Senior Lecturer at the University of Brighton. One year later he joined Durham University. From 2007 he was the Head of the Mechanics Research & Teaching Group, until in 2013 he was appointed Head of the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences.

Dr Xuerui Mao joined the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences as a lecturer in Fluid Mechanics and Turbomachinery in Sep, 2012. After receiving PhD of Computational Fluid Mechanics from Imperial College London in 2011, he spent one year as research fellow in Monash University and then worked half a year in LadHyX, Ecole Polytechnique.
