YANG Yichun and LYU Jun, from the Communication Acoustics Laboratory of the Institute of Acoustics, were invited to the 2013 AGU Fall Meeting from Dec. 8th to 14th, 2013.

The American Geophysical Union (AGU) was founded in 1919 as a committee within the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences with more than 60,000 members from 135 countries. It works on a broad spectrum of scientific topics that span all of the Earth and space sciences, and it was the first time that there was an “infrasound research” session in its meeting.

As experts of infrasound research, YANG and LYU participated in this session. Global geophysicists shared their infrasound research progress, including Prof. C. de Groot-Hedin’s USArray construction, which can be used to study and construct our wide-area monitoring infrasound network. In her introduction, the USArray had already been developed to cover all the USA for monitoring seismic and infrasound waves associated with earthquakes.

In the meeting, our poster “Precursor Infrasound Waves before Strong Earthquakes” had attracted many attention. Many geophysicists have communicated with us throughout. Ileana Tibuleac, associate professor from the Nevada University said she had found and studied a kind of low-frequency atmosphere pressure waves resembling the waves we found, so she would like to have in-deep cooperation with us in future. Milton Garcés, director of the Infrasound Laboratory of Hawaii University, believed our research of monitoring and studying infrasound waves in atmosphere very valuable and meaningful although there was no definite conclusion about the precursor infrasound waves we found. Besides these, many institutes in the Australia, Switzerland, Greece, South Korea, and Japan expressed their intention of cooperation with us in infrasound research field.

In this meeting, we have showed our institute’s achievements in the infrasound research field and won global praise for our efforts.
