Invited by the Key Laboratory of Speech Acoustics and Content Understanding of Institute of Acoustics (IOA), Prof. Nam Soo Kim from the Seoul National University (Korea) visited IOA and shared his research on speech signal processing and speech recognition on July 8.

One member, Shin Jae Kang, from Prof. Kim’s group introduced his work on feature compensation in noise and reverberation conditions during their visit. The work described in this presentation is targeted to improve the robustness of automatic speech recognition system by compensating the acoustic features to noise and reverberation based on the IMM measure. His preliminary experimental results demonstrated the potential of this newly-proposed approach.

In addition, Prof. Kim also briefly introduced other research topics, audio watermarking and multi-channel speech enhancement, that are done in his group. Moreover, Prof. Kim discussed the further collaboration with us under the support of the A3 Foresight Program by NSFC, NRF and JSPS.

Nam Soo Kim received the B.S. degree in electronics engineering from Seoul National University in 1988, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology in 1990 and 1994, respectively. From 1994 to 1998, he was with Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology as a member of technical staff, where he was involved in a number of R/D projects related to speech recognition and signal processing. Since 1998, he has been with the School of Electrical Engineering, Seoul National University where he is currently an assistant professor. His research area includes speech signal processing, speech recognition and speech/audio coding.
