(From ZHOU Yinqiu of Ultrasonic Physics and Exploration Laboratory) Dr. Miroslav Brajano from Curtin University of Technology paid a visit to IACAS and would do research work here for 3 months. During his visit, he would give a series of lectures on "Propagation of Elastic Waves in Porous Media".

On May 25, 2010, Dr. Miro gave the first lecture entitled "The principle of minimal action-basic law of nature" and the rest six lectures would be held every Tuesday from June 1to July 6. The series of lectures was highly valued by leaders of IACAS. WANG Xiaomin, director of the institute attended and made a welcome speech.

Dr. Miro is good at Rock Acoustic Physics. This subject which is now becoming a focus in researches of applied geophysics and geophysical prospecting is based on acoustic measurements of rocks, uses acoustic theories in porous medias, establishes a quantitive relationship between macroscopic elastic parameters of rocks and microscopic structures of porosity, directs the study of the theory and simulation of elastic waves propagation and the research of analysis and evaluation of elastic waves. Dr. Miro started from fundamental theories, explained the important physical concepts and laws such as the principle of minimal action, generalized coordinates, Calculus of variations, Lagrange function, Fermat's principle, Generalized Snell's law and so on. He made listeners understand abstract physical concepts better through a variety of problems solutions.

More Information about Dr. Miro:

Miroslav Brajano received the B.S. degree in 1991 from University of Belgrade in Yugoslavia and the M. Sc. degree in 1996 from Charles University in Czech Republic both in Physics science. He received his Ph.D. degree in Geophysics in 2002 from Curtin University of Technology in Australia.

He is now a Scientific Researcher in Department of Exploration Geophysics of Curtin University of Technology in Australia. In 1993-1996, he researched for Statistical methods in Geophysics, Spectral analysis, Geomagnetic theory, Magnetotelluric method, Signal processing and Fortran programming. In 1996-2000, he worked on Seismic data acquisition, Data processing and visualization using PROMAX.2000-2007 Theory of elasticity, hydrodynamics, Biot's theory of poroelasticity and modeling of wave propagation in inhomogeneous porous media, development of the methods for estimation of fluid mobility in rocks and geometry of inhomogeneities (fractures, patches) based on frequency dependent dispersion and attenuation of seismic waves. And in 2007-2009, he mostly studied for Stress induced anisotropy of elastic waves in porous media, Development of method for elasticity tensor inversion for sandstone reservoirs from cross-dipole sonic logging data only, Amplitude and velocity effects measured on spherical shale core samples in a wide range of confining stress, Anisotropic AVO analysis, Crystalographic analysis of the texture of shales.
