Prof. T.S. HUANG visited IACAS

(From WEI Xiaojun of Digital System Integration Lab)Prof. Thomas S. HUANG from UIUC (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) visited China from May, 25 to Jun, 6 in answer to the invitation of CAS Academic divisions and Bureau of international cooperation.

On Jun.2, Prof. HUANG delivered a fascinating lecture titled "Audio-Visual Human Computer Interaction" in IACAS. Prof. HUANG shared his team's current research achievements in the fields of audio-visual emotive avatar, emotion recognition and hand tracking by theoretical analysis and vivid demo, which aroused warm discussion of audiences from digital system integration Lab and ThinkIT Lab. Prof. HUANG also gave some suggestion about IACAS's international cooperation with foreign institutes.

Thomas S. Huang is a Member of National Academy of Engineering, foreign member of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering and also guest professor in IACAS. Prof. Huang received his B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering from National Taiwan University and his M.S. and Sc.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is William L. Everitt Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Research Professor at the Coordinated Science Lab (CSL), and Head of the Image Formation and Processing Group at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology and Co-chair of the Institute??s major research theme Human Computer Intelligent Interaction in UIUC. His professional interests are computer vision, image compression and enhancement, pattern recognition, and multimodal signal processing. He is a fellow of the International Association of Pattern Recognition, IEEE, and the Optical Society of American. He has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, an A.V.Humboldt Foundation Senior U.S. Scientist Award, IEEE Third Millennium Medal and other awards. Prof. HUANG??s professional interests lie in the broad area of information technology, especially the transmission and processing of multidimensional signals. He has published 20 books, and over 500 papers in Network Theory, Digital Filtering,Image Processing and Computer Vision.
