Prof. Jiang Xudong, Prof. Gan Woon-Seng and Prof. Ma Kai-Kuan of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore visited our institute during Jun.26 to Jul.5, 2007 at the invitation of the Communication Acoustic Lab.
As the first blow of the whole academic exchanges activity, Prof. Jiang Xudong came to our institute and gave us a report titled "Biometrics: A Image Processing and Pattern Recognition System" on the morning of Jun.29. Starting from the basic theory of biometrics, such as fingerprint and face recognition, he introduced many frontier problems in the international biometrics field. His report focused on the analysis of the local direction estimation, data dimension reduction, characteristic extraction and classification, latest research results in image processing and so on. The whole report lasted 2 hours and attracted many researchers from different labs. Prof. Jiang's report was awarded by warm applause. He came to many labs in person and had discussions with the researchers there in the fields like realization of the surround MOEG, ultrasonic face recognition, signal spectrum estimation and so on. Prof. Jiang and the researchers of Communication Acoustics Lab together confirmed the future cooperation in the application and solution of model estimation and learning algorithm in acoustic detection of the hidden objects; pattern recognition technology based on multimode (fingerprint, voice and face recognition) and so on.
On Jun.5, Prof. Gan Woon-Seng gave us another wonderful report titled "Digital Media Processing". In his report, he briefly introduced the achievements of his group's researches in the design and optimization of embedded signal processing and its application in image compression technology and noise control. He also talked about the development in new-media technology, active sound correction technique based on psychoacoustics and so on. Besides, Prof. Gan introduced us his new book "Embedded Signal Processing with the Micro Signal Architecture" (published by IEEE) and the contributions notices of the magazine named "EURASIP Journal on Audio, Speech, and Music Processing". He sincerely welcomed the papers from our institute for his monograph "Intelligent Audio, Speech and Music Processing Applications". Director Tian Jing, Director Yan Yonghong of ThinkIT lab, Prof. Li Xiaodong of Communication Acoustics Lab, Prof. Ni Hong of Network and New-media Technology Research Center and the researchers and graduates interested in the topic attend the seminar. After the report, Prof. Ni Hong and Prof. Gan exchanged their ideas in technology R&D and industry cooperation.
This visit was the continuation of Prof. Gan's visit in 2002. For many years, the members in the Signal Processing Lab of Nanyang Technological University and the researchers in our institute kept good relationship with each other. Recently, Prof. Gan and Prof. Yang Jun of Communication Acoustics Lab jointly handed in the application for a new-media technology program, which has already passed the first examination. During the whole visit, Prof. Gan had 3 seminars with our researchers and shared his rich experience in signal processing chip, which let all the attendants benefit a lot.
The guests also paid a visit to the Noise and Vibration Lab, Communication Acoustics Lab and ThinkIT Lab of our institute. Our institute's research ability and experimental equipment impressed them a lot. They all said our institute had already had the power to rank as one of the best in the international acoustic world.
Director Tian Jing and Deputy Director Ju Qi had warm discussions with the guests as regards to the future cooperation. Director Tian put forward some advices for the "International Congress on Sound and Vibration" (ICSV). Prof. Yan Yonghong suggested in the future cooperation, we could exchange graduates for the short-term academic visit. In this way, they could not only broaden their horizon, but also bring up the friendship between each other, which was very beneficial in promoting the mutual development in a long term. The officer Li Ying of Science and Technology Department proposed the joint application for the research funds, which could ensure the long-termed substantial cooperation and common development in the future. |
