Professor Andrew Ball, along with Dr. Gu Feng and some others members, from Manchester University, UK visited our institute during May, 1 to 20. The distinguished guests coming from afar exchanged many valuable ideas with our researchers of Noise and Vibration Lab and Communication Acoustics Lab. This exchange activity was an important part of the international cooperation project -- "The research on acoustical structural characterization of mechanical & electrical equipment", which was jointly supported by United Kingdom Accreditation Service and Chinese Academy of Sciences. During the last 3 years, our institute and the Manchester University had already carried our many cooperations and achieved fruitful research results. 　

The two parts held a seminar in our institute on May, 3. On the seminar, Director Tian made an overall and systematic review of the cooperation background, research progress and achieved results. Furthermore, he put forward the suggestions for the future cooperation. 

The report Prof. Andrew gave us titled "An Investigation into the Use of Exhaust System Acoustic Measurements for Diesel Engine Combustion Monitoring". Jiang Jian, one member of the visit group was once the graduate cultivated by our institute. Now he is pursuing his doctor degree in Manchester University. He introduced his study and work life in Britain. As the visit scholar, Researcher Jiao Fenglei just came back from Manchester University. He also gave a report titled "Water-Filled Pipeline Blockage Detection". He reported the research situation of hydrodynamic noise measurement technology of fluid machinery and Detection technology for pipeline plugging. 　

During the visit in our institute, the two parts made an agreement on the cooperation direction for the next step and decided to carry out long term cooperation on the researches of "Acoustic monitoring and sound source identification" and "Duct acoustics and noise control". Moreover, the two parts made a further discussion on the graduate education and so on.
