Dr. Tobias M Muller, the research team leader for geophysics at Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), Australia, delivered an academic report titled “Seismic attenuation in shales (and other rocks)” in the Institute of Acoustics (IOA) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on Nov.9.

Dr. Muller was invited by Prof. WANG Xiuming, director of Research Center for Ultrasonics and Technologies of IOA. Numerous researchers and students attended.

Attenuation is common phenomenon which can be observed in VSP, full waveform of acoustic well logging and digital rock physics experiments. In the report, Dr. Muller firstly introduced quality factor Q, and emphasized the principle of scattering attenuation existing in acoustic well logging. The value of Q can be obtained using generalized O’Doherty-Anstey theory. This technology had been applied in shale gas exploration and obtained a good effect. One attenuation measuring method in low frequency was given by Dr. Muller in the end.

In the Q&A session, Dr. Muller answered questions about his research asked by the audience. He also visited the Rock Physics Lab of Research Center for Ultrasonics and Technologies and then discussed the possible cooperation between the two sides in the future with the research team led by Prof. WANG.

Dr. Mueller received the Master diploma in geophysics from Karlsruhe University, Germany, in 1998. Then he studied on wave scattering in random media in the group of Prof Shapiro and received the Ph.D. degree from Freie Universität Berlin (Free University Berlin, Germany) in 2001. From 2002 to 2004 he worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the group of Prof Boris Gurevich at the department of Exploration Geophysics in Curtin University of Technology, Australia. Since 2008, he has been the research team leader for geophysics at CSIRO, Perth. His research fields of expertise include geophysical wave field modelling, waves in random media, theory of poroelasticity, and seismic rock physics. He has published more than 50 papers in ISI journals.
