Professor Peter Gerstoft from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego visited the Institute Of Acoustics (IOA) on September 15, 2015, invited by the State Key Laboratory of Acoustics. During the visit, Peter gave an academic lecture entitled "Compressive sensing in ocean acoustics". It was hosted by Professor ZHANG Renhe from the State Key Laboratory of Acoustics and more than fifty IOA staff and students attended it.

Peter first made a brief introduction of the academic work of his research group, including the geophysical exploration in the South Pole, monitoring the motion of cars and planes using acoustic method and tracking the hurricane by acoustic means. In the following, he presented recent progress on compressive beamforming in underwater acoustics. Peter described the concept of compressive beamforming in mathematics and then compared the compressive beamforming with conventional beamforming and high-resolution beamforming, which demonstrated the prospect of compressive sensing in underwater acoustics. At the end of the lecture, Peter briefly introduced the compressive passive fathometer using ambient noise. During the lecture, participants posed questions actively.

Professor Peter Gerstoft received his Ph.D. from the Technical University of Denmark in 1986. From 1987-1997, he worked at Schlumberger, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute and SACLANT Undersea Research Centre, separately. Since 1997 he has been a Geophysicist and Adjunct Professor with Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego.
