Prof. Brian C. J. Moore, renowned scientist in the area of auditory perception from University of Cambridge, visited the Institute of Acoustics (IOA), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) at the invitation of CAS Key Laboratory of Speech Acoustics and Content Understanding.

For his visit, he gave a lecture named “Benefits and Limitations of Hearing Aids” in DSP multifunctional hall on September19. The lecture was hosted by Prof. FU Qiang of IOA. Several researchers and graduate students from Beijing University and IOA attended it.

In the beginning, Prof. Moore introduced the reasons, characters and the perceptual consequences of hearing loss. Afterwards, he focused on the signal processing principle and algorithms of hearing aid.

Hearing loss affects more than 10% of the adult population in most countries, especially prevalent among the elderly. The most common form of hearing loss arises from dysfunction of the cochlea in the inner ear. In most cases, the only form of treatment is via hearing aids or (for profound losses) cochlear implants. In fact, hearing loss involves much more than just loss of sensitivity to weak sounds.

Prof. Moore described the signal processing performed in hearing aids. As well, he analyzed the extent to which hearing aids "compensate" for hearing loss. He also looked into the future research in this area. At last, he answered the questions from the listeners.

Prof. Moore is famous for his fruitful research in the perception of sound, mechanisms of normal hearing and hearing impairments, design of signal processing hearing aids for sensorineural hearing loss, design and specification of high-fidelity sound-reproducing equipment as well as perception of music and of musical instruments. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of London, a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, a Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science, and an Honorary Fellow of the Belgian Society of Audiology and the British Society of Hearing Aid Audiologists. He is President of the Association of Independent Hearing Healthcare Professionals (UK).  He has written or edited 17 books and over 590 scientific papers and book chapters.  He is also an associate editor of the journal Hearing Research.
