On Nov.4, 2008, Prof. Stephen Elliott of ISVR visited IACAS and gave brilliant lectures.
Prof. Stephen Elliott is the Director of Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) at the University of Southampton, UK. His research direction is on adaptive systems, signal processing and control group and the research work concerned with modeling and synthesis of speech, active control and vibration isolation of structural wave. He made great contribution to the research on robust and adaptive algorithm. His latest research is mainly on Biomedical Signal Processing and tries to create a new type of cochlear model. Artificial cochlea is a kind of electronic device which can function as the human's ear. It can help the deaf adults and children to hear sound, or even to regain the ability of hearing. It is a hot research issue in acoustic field nowadays. Moreover, Prof. Stephen Elliott established the non-linear state space mechanical model of cochlea. The related research results show that the non-linear factor can control the instability of the system effectively and this mode can simulate the cochlea's mechanical proprieties very well. Prof. Stephen Elliott has authored three books and published 150 papers in refereed journals, and produced over 300 conference papers and other reports. He is a member of the Acoustical Society of America, a Senior Member of the IEEE and a Fellow of the IEE and IoA. He was jointly awarded the Tyndall Medal by the Institute of Acoustics in 1992.
Prof. Stephen Elliott made a detailed introduction of ISVR as well as his latest research results on mechanical model of cochlea in his lecture. ISVR is a world well-known institute in research into acoustics and vibration, which is consisted by Dynamics group, Fluid Dynamics and Acoustics group, Human Sciences group, Signal Processing and Control group and South of England Cochlear Implant Centre. In 2005, ISVR was awarded Queen's Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education.
Prof. Stephen Elliott's lecture attracted many researchers and students in the institute. A warm discussion followed after the lecture. He and Prof. Liao Xiaodong also had a talk on the future cooperation and academic exchange activities. It is believed that Prof. Stephen Elliott's visit will be a push to advance the scientific collaboration between ISVR and IACAS.
