Abstract Dimensionality and expressions in Chinese of auditory attributes of vehicle noise are investigated. First, three questionnaire surveys were accomplished to obtain large number of auditory descriptors in Chinese, and then two subjective jury tests were accomplished to obtain a similarity matrix and ranked descriptors based on Paired Comparison and Semantic Differential Approach. Finally, by use of Multidimensional Scaling and Principal Component Analysis, auditory attributes for equal-loudness vehicle noise were determined and expressed in terms of three Chinese adjectives corresponding to "roughness", "sharpness" and "fluctuation".
