Regulator unveils ultra high definition television standard

GENEVA, May 24 (Xinhua) -- The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) on Thursday unveiled a new standard of Ultra High Definition Television or UHDTV that could bring about a revolution for the broadcasting industry.

Ultra high definition picture quality has improved colour fidelity, and options for higher numbers of pictures per second than in today's television systems.

Comparing with today's HDTV which has between 1 to 2 megapixels, the first level of UHDTV will have about 8 megapixels ie 3,840 x 2,160 image systems. The next level comes at about 32 megapixels ie 7,680 x 4,320 image system.

Recommendations on technical details for the new standard is now being submitted to for approval. With the new standard, the industry can begin commercializing UHDTV.

"UHDTV is an earth-shaking development in the world of television," ITU Secretary-General Hamadoun Toure said, adding that it would be a "breathtaking experience."
