Professor Adrian Traian PLESCA from the Gheorghe Asachi Technical University of Iasi, invited by Prof. LI Honglang, visited the Research Center for Ultrasonics and Technologies of the Institute of Acoustics (IOA), the Chinese Academy of Sciences on August 26. In his visit, Adrian also introduced his research of thermal analysis in power devices.

In the lab’s visit, LI Honglang introduced the principles of passive wireless sensors detecting temperature, pressure based on surface acoustic waves, and gave some demos. Adrian was much interested in the lab’s research progress.

After the lab’s visit, Adrian delivered an academic report titled “Thermal analysis of power electronic and electrical assemblies”. From the report, power devices may fail catastrophically if the junction temperature becomes high enough to cause thermal runaway and melting. Thermal analysis can be performed by a variety of methods. Adrian presented a 3D thermal analysis of power thyristor and PCB using a simplified thermal model of the vias. Based on this, special fast fuses have been designed to protect them. In this way, operation of fuses used to protect power semiconductors, especially in the case of transient conditions for different types of power rectifiers can be modelled.

For the report’s Q&A session, Adrian answered some questions about his research asked by the audience and helped them understand his research.

In the following, LI Honglang presented IOA’s research on surface acoustic wave temperature sensor and its application on the power devices. This has added to understanding each other better and made the foundation of cooperation between the IOA and Gheorghe Asachi Technical University.

Prof. Adrian Traian PLESCA is a lifetime professor in the Gheorghe Asachi Technical University of Iasi. His current research interests include new type of special electrical equipment, protection of power semiconductor and 3D simulation of power devices. He has published 9 books, more than 100 papers and been granted 20 patents.
