Professor Andrew Norris from Rutgers University Lectured Acoustic Metamaterials in IOA

 | |

Professor Andrew Norris from Rutgers University visited the Institute Of Acoustics (IOA) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) on June 23, invited by IOA Professor ZHANG Hailan. Professor Andrew Norris gave an academic lecture entitled “Acoustic metamaterials for underwater sound control” in IOA during his visit.

The lecture was hosted by Professor WANG Xiuming, director of the Research Center for Ultrasonics and Technologies. Professor YANG Jun, director of the CAS Key Laboratory of Noise and Vibration Research also attended the lecture, together with more than seventy IOA staff and students.

Professor Andrew Norris first made a brief introduction of the Rutgers University where he came from.

In the following, he provided an overview of the acoustic metamaterials, like resonant oscillator, low frequency band gaps, photonic crystals and transformation acoustics. And on this basis, a more in-depth introduction about acoustic metamaterials of negative index of refraction was presented, in aspect of experimental characteristics, numerical simulation and application foreground.

The lecture aroused broad interests of the participants. Professor WANG Xiuming and Associate Professor HE Xiao also exchanged views with Professor Andrew Norris on the possibility of utilizing acoustic metamaterials in acoustics logging while drilling tools.

Professor Andrew Norris is the fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and Institute of Mathematics and Applications. His research interests include ultrasonic non-destructed test, geophysical prospecting and acoustical metamaterials.
