Oct. 20th, President David Kennedy from the Society of Petrophysicists and Well Log Analysts (SPWLA) visited the Institute of Acoustics (IOA) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, invited by Prof. WANG Xiuming, chairman of IOA Academic Committee.
A welcome meeting was held for David. On the meeting, IOA Director WANG Xiaomin made a brief introduction of IOA, including IOA’s research progress in solid acoustics and deep drilling exploration and measurements.
David made an academic talk titled “On the Future Evolution of the LWD versus Wireline Markets and Tools” on the basis of American logging technology development and specific research in recent decades.
He compared the similarities and differences, the advantages and disadvantages between the LWD (Logging While Drilling) and wireline technologies. From the aspects of the theory and technology, David also analyzed problems of the current logging technologies. According to his talk, the costs of LWD would be reduced because of the increasingly fierce competition of the logging companies.
Besides, David described the evaluation objectives under LWD, including the geological model explanations and the parametric evaluation of storage formation. Moreover, he introduced unconventional rock formation, and vividly demonstrated the characteristics of the formations using model pictures.
More than forty members and students from IOA participated, including Prof. ZHANG Hailan, GAO Yongkang, Prof. LIN Weijun, Prof. WANG Dong, Prof. CONG Jiansheng, et al. After the talk, they had a heated discussion with David about his research interests and his talk.
