During 27-31 Oct., the 168th Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America was held in Indianapolis, the capital of the Indiana State of USA. Associate Professor HE Xiao and doctoral student ZHOU Yinqiu, both from the Ultrasonic Physics and Exploration Laboratory of the Institute of Acoustics (IOA), Chinese Academy of Sciences were invited to attend this meeting and make presentations.

Meetings of the Acoustical Society of America are held semiannually by the Acoustical Society of America. The aim of the meetings is to increase and diffuse the knowledge and technology of acoustics and their practical applications.

There were various sessions in the 168th meeting, such as Acoustical Oceanography, Animal Bioacoustics, Architectural Acoustics, Biomedical Acoustics, Engineering Acoustics, Education Acoustics, Musical Acoustics, Noise, Physical Acoustics, Psychological and Physiological Acoustics, Signal Processing in Acoustics, Speech Communication, Structural Acoustics and Vibration, Underwater Acoustics and so on.

Associate Professor HE Xiao and doctoral student ZHOU Yinqiu attended the special session of the “Borehole Acoustic Logging and Micro-seismic for Hydrocarbon Reservoir Characterization”. On behalf of Professor WANG Xiuming, director of the Ultrasonic Physics and Exploration Laboratory of IOA, HE Xiao made an invited speech titled “Generalized Collar Waves and Their Characteristics”, in which the concept of generalized collar waves was proposed and the propagating characteristics of direct collar waves and indirect collar waves were discussed based on results of wave field modeling. The speech was simple but profound and obtained praise by the experts on the meeting.

Doctoral student ZHOU Yinqiu made a presentation of “Numerical Simulations of an Electromagnetic Actuator in a Low-frequency Range for Dipole Acoustic Wave Logging” which introduced a novel electromagnetic dipole transmitter for wireline logging.

Both presentations aroused wide interests and attentions of domestic and foreign research scholars. Researchers from Weatherford and Schlumberger companies made fervent discussions with both presenters.

New methods and research hotspots in development of logging technologies are introduced on this meeting. And currently, foreign scholars dedicated in logging and seismic exploration are mostly from oil and service companies, showing that requirements in the application push the development of research and production. Through active and warm communication with foreign scholars, we have realized the chance and challenge in the oil logging industry. As well, since we have made lots of meaningful efforts, we have confidence in making progress for national oil logging technology development.
