The 2014 Symposium on Piezoelectricity, Acoustic Waves and Device Application (SPAWDA2014) was held from Oct.30. to Nov. 2, Beijing.

WANG Xiaomin, symposium chair, vice president of the Acoustical Society of China (ASC) and director of the Institute of Acoustics (IOA), Chinese Academy of Sciences made a speech on the opening ceremony. FENG Xiqiao, secretary-general of the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (CSTAM) and Yook-kong Yong, IEEE UFFC-S (The Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics and Frequency Control Society) representative from the Rutgers University delivered their speeches as well.

With the increasing research and development activities in piezoelectricity and acoustic waves and recently fast growth in piezoelectric devices, the ASC, the CSTAM and IEEE UFFC-S also with industrial support, had decided to initiate this symposium.

Nine researchers from domestic and international universities and laboratories presented plenary talks about their theoretical and experimental findings on the symposium. Two hundred professors, experts and students from six countries, including China, Japan, France, Russia, the United States and Iran were present on the SPAWDA2014. The symposium proceedings will be published by World Scientific for worldwide distribution, and will be included in the IEEE Xplore database and EI-indexed.

On the third day of the symposium, there was a spectacular discussion session hosted by LI Honglang, organization committee chairman from the IOA. Six engineers of the piezoelectric device industries were invited to talk about new products and business trends, creating opportunities to promote close cooperation between research and product development. Participants asked many questions about the experts’ academic research and life experience. The experts answered them all with pleasure and invited the participants to come to the stage to share their own research findings and experience as well.

There was also a special session for student papers contest at the SPAWDA 2014. Forty-six students took part and made their presentation in this session. Ten students were awarded outstanding students of which two were from the Acoustical Microelectromechanical System Laboratory of IOA, and they were TIAN Yahui and WANG Lijun.

More than 160 abstracts were received in this symposium, and topics covering the theory of piezoelectricity (including micro nano piezoelectric theory), acoustic wave theory (bulk and surface acoustic waves, etc.), design and analysis of piezoelectric devices (resonators, sensors, transducer, MEMS\NEMS\Nano piezoelectric devices, etc.), piezoelectric materials, ultrasonics, manufacturing technology of piezoelectric devices, design and manufacturing for oscillators and filter, ultrasound imaging, and drug delivery and therapy.

Symposium on piezoelectricity, acoustic waves and device application as one of the multidisciplinary exchange platforms with rapid development, spans the fields of acoustics, materials, mechanics, information, and even medicine. Set in analysis, design and application of the piezoelectricity and acoustic wave devices, it aims at promoting theory integrating practice. In the areas of the acoustics and mechanics, it has made an important place of its own.
