UK Royal Academy of Engineering Fellow Stephen Elliott Visited IACAS

 | |

Stephen Elliott, Fellow of UK Royal Academy of Engineering, from the University of Southampton visited the Institute of Acoustics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IACAS) from Nov. 11th to 15th, invited by IACAS Key Laboratory of Noise and Vibration Research Director YANG Jun.

On the 13th and 14th morning, Professor Elliott gave one lecture respectively, entitled “Sound Field Control: Enhancing Signals and Attenuating Noise” and “Feedback Control”. Examples and signal processing formulations of sound reproduction and active noise attenuation were presented, as well as sound field control physical limits due to acoustics and combined systems for both reproduction and attenuation. For the theory of “Feedback Control”, he took the active headset as example, its sensitivity functions, robust stability, enhancement, compensators and other aspects were explained. Both of the two lectures were well received by more than sixty staff from IACAS.

On the 13th afternoon, IACAS more than ten staff had a deep discussion with Professor Elliott about the research results of the Noise and Vibration Research Laboratory, including active pipeline noise attenuation, active vibration isolation, distributed active attenuation and others, which got Professor Elliott’s compliments and also some suggestions. Besides, based on the Memorandum of Cooperation signed in the year 2011, detailed future cooperation plan was also discussed by both sides.

Earlier, Professor Elliott had a look around the experimental apparatus and some research results of active noise attenuation, including the active vibration isolation platform, active noise attenuation apparatus, active and passive combination noise attenuation system, distributed active attenuation experimental device and others. Professor Elliott also experienced the virtual acoustical environment as well as audio frequency research result, such as the digital speaker, sound communication, guide apparatus and wireless amplifier system.

Communication with the famous scholar in the field of acoustics, Professor Elliott, will push forward IACAS research progress on the active noise attenuation and acoustical signal processing, meanwhile, provide more opportunities to work with the world's leading research organization on acoustics.
