China-Russia Senior Seminar on Infrasound Research Held at IACAS

 | |

The China-Russia senior seminar on infrasound research, organized by the Key Laboratory of Noise and Vibration Research, Institute of Acoustics, Chinese Academy of Sciences was held on May 9, aiming to provide a platform for research progress exchange of infrasound, especially the earthquake infrasound.

The Obukhov Institute of Atmospheric Physics of Russian Academy of Sciences, Peking University, China University of Geosciences, the Institute of Crustal Dynamics of China Earthquake Administration, the Institute of Geophysics of China Earthquake Administration,Beijing University of Technology and other there famous universities and institutes home and abroad attended this seminar.

In the beginning, Researcher YANG Jun, Director of the Noise and Vibration Laboratory made a brief introduction of IACAS infrasound research progress during the years.

And then, the invited experts Sergey Kulichkov and Igor Chunchuzov from the Obukhov Institute of Atmospheric Physics of Russian Academy of Sciences presented their infrasound research. They gave their reports named “On Physical Simulation of Long-range Infrasonic Propagation in the Atmosphere”, "Effects of Anisotropic Turbulence on Infrasound Propagation in the Atmosphere” and "Modeling Infrasound Signal Observed by a Dense Seismic Network” respectively. Both of them observed and studied the long-range propagation of infrasound from the ground-surface explosion.

In the following, Researcher YANG Yichun introduced his study of “Monitoring & Study of Infrasound Waves Associated with Natural Events”, elaborating the infrasound analysis results before and after the Ya’an Earthquake in China. After discussion among the experts, they agreed that infrasound is an effective means to observe and research natural events, especially the earthquake. ZHU Xing also presented his research of “The Infrasound Signatures of the 2013 April 20 Ya’an Earthquake in China”.

Afterwards, Researcher YANG Yichun put forward the idea of “intercoupling” between the infrasonicwave and the ground-surface explosion wave, which had aroused great interest among the experts attending the seminar.

This seminar laid a good foundation for exploring new techniques and methods to find infrasound information related to the natural events.
