(From CHEN Xiang of Key Laboratory of Noise and Vibration Research) On September 20, Prof. Pan Jie, invited by Prof. Liu Bilong , visited Institute of Acoustics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IACAS) and made an seminar entitled "An investigation on near field acoustics and cello's wolf tone".

The report was chaired by Prof. Liu Bilong. Firstly, Prof. Pan provided a question on the underwater noise measurements, and then discussed the change of near acoustic fields according to the different places of a small metal, which attaching on a large metal covered with sound-absorbing material. He presented a theoretical mode and several simulation results. At the second part, he discussed an interesting musical problem "cello's wolf tone" and established a possible model of string motion, friction and the vibration of panel. Focusing on his report, the attendees presented several related questions.

Prof. Jie Pan is a Professor in the School of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Western Australia, and is a famous Chinese scientist in the field of acoustic. His main research interests are acoustics, vibration and control. Many researchers from IACAS cooperate with Prof Pan and have a mutual communication and scientific research.
