Professor Chongfu Ying, 93, a renowned scientist and educator of physics, founder and pioneer of ultrasonics in China, the Former Director-General of the Acoustical Society of China, one of the founders of Institute of Acoustics, senior academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, passed away at 7:48pm on 30 June, 2011, in China-Japan Friendship Hospital in Beijing.
Professor Ying was born in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province in 1918. He graduated from Physics Department of Huazhong University in 1940 and graduated from Physics Department of Tsinghua University with his master degree in 1944. In 1952 he received his Ph. D. degree in Brown University, USA. In 1956 he returned to China and founded the first ultrasonic laboratory in China. He is one of the founders of Ultrasonics in China. His early papers on ultrasonic scattering in solid materials have become the foundation for the later development of ultrasonics.
