(From YE Chao of Communication Acoustics Laboratory) Invited by the Communication Acoustics Laboratory, Prof. Guan Shanqun from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT) visited IACAS and gave an academic report on April 13, 2011. The title was "The Combination of Philosophy in Acoustics with Interdisciplinary Subjects and Areas".

From the artistic point of view, Prof. Guan stated that acoustics, especially the electro acoustics, the emotional thinking is of importance in acoustics especially in electro acoustics as well as the rational thinking. After illustrating the formation, transmission and reception of the audible sound, he pointed out that electro acoustics involving multiple disciplines such as physics, signal processing and biology. Meanwhile, he indicated that acoustics, as the convolution of sciences and art, required the combination of the emotional and rational thinking mode. Furthermore, he proposed a method to decrease the signal distortion in the recording process, and he also suggested a way to cover up the program deficiency with the appreciation system. Finally he discussed on how to reduce the linear and non-linear distortion of loudspeakers, and how to use the loudspeakers correctly in practical applications.

Resume:

GUAN Shanqun is an electro acoustic specialist involving areas of music, architecture and physiology, etc. As an advocator of the combination of science and art in Chinese stereo and broadcasting enterprises, he directed the development of Chinese stereo and broadcasting enterprises, participated in the drawing up of many national standards of electro acoustics as one of the main drafters. He also innovatively composed "The Fundamentals of Audio Engineering", which is the unique monograph on audio engineering in China. He accomplished the research of an electro acoustic method aiming at improving the transition of electricity, mechanics and sound. Prof. Guan made a great contribution to the research of large audio/video conferencing system and virtual sound implementation.
