(From WEI Xiangfeng of ThinkIT Lab) In the recent international semantic evaluation SemEval-2010, HNC research group of Institute of Acoustics, Chinese Academy of Sciences won the third place in the Task 11. It is another good result from HNC research group after the first place in the Event Description Unit Recognition of Syntactic Parsing Evaluation last year.

SemEval is a famous international conference in semantic evaluation area, including Word Sense Disambiguation and Semantic Parsing and so on. It is organized by SigLex, a Special Interest Group on the Lexicon of ACL (Association for Computational Linguistics). SemEval has been an international open platform for evaluating cross-lingual semantic analysis system and promoting the communication between all kinds of semantic analysis system such as word sense disambiguation, semantic role labeling, cross-lingual information extraction and sentiment analysis. There were 18 tasks in SemEval-2010 (http://semeval2.fbk.eu/semeval2.php?location=), and WSD, Ellipsis, Metonymy, Lexical Substitution, Information Extraction and Semantic Role Labeling in Chinese, Japanese, English and other language were all involved.

Semantic analysis is one of the most difficult research tasks in language analysis. It is a deep meaning analysis after the morphology paring and syntax parsing and needs the knowledge of grammar, semantics and pragmatics. The perfect technologies of automatic semantic analysis will help computer to understand the natural language of human being and to achieve the aim of intelligent computer, for example man-machine dialog. It can also improve the performance of many systems, such as machine translation, intelligent search and semantic web. Now many scientists and researchers are working hard for the perfect semantic analysis system in colleges, universities and institutes, including Institute of Acoustics, Institute of Automation, Tsinghua University, Peking University, Northeasten University, Harbin Institute of Technology, National University of Defense Technology and Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Over one hundred teams participated SemEval-2010. Many of them came from famous institutes and universities in the world. HNC research group from Institute of Acoustics, Chinese Academic Sciences participated task 11 "Event Detection in Chinese News Sentences", which is involved in word sense disambiguation, semantic parsing of sentence and semantic role labeling. The objective of the task 11 is to disambiguate the senses of a verb in a sentence, to label the roles associated with the verb and to detect the whole event of a verb in the sentence. Finally, the result is in the third place of ranking result from seven teams (http://semeval2.fbk.eu/semeval2.php?location=Rankings/ranking11.htm). The result shows that the semantic technologies of HNC theory are unique and advantaged. HNC research group will continue to research and develop the technologies of semantic analysis in language analysis. HNC research group are going to apply their technologies into the real service of language information processing and to get better result in future semantic evaluation.
