(National Laboratory of Acoustics)The 2nd International Conference on Shallow Water Acoustics (SWAC' 09) successfully held at Grand Hyatt Hotel in Shanghai from Sep.16 to 20, 2009. Prof. Jeffrey Simmen from Applied Physics Laboratory,University of Washington (USA) and Prof. Jing Tian from Institute of Acoustics, Chinese Academy of Sciences are the Conference Co-Chairs. Prof. Renhe Zhang from National Laboratory of Acoustics, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Prof. Jixun Zhou from Georgia Institute of Technology (USA) are the Honorary Co-Chairs. Dr. Ellen Livingston from Office of Naval Research (USA) and Prof. Shi-e Yang from Harbin Engineering University (China) are the Advisory Board Co-Chairs. The conference was co-organized by Institute of Acoustics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, National Laboratory of Acoustics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Applied Physics Laboratory, University of Washington (USA) and Georgia Institute of Technology (USA). It was sponsored by Office of Naval Research (USA), Chinese Academy of Sciences, Acoustical Society of China, Acoustical Society of America, National Natural Science Foundation of China.
Prof. Jeffrey Simmen, Prof. Jing Tian, Prof. Renhe Zhang and Dr. Ellen Livingston delivered speeches at the opening ceremony. The leaders of Institute of Acoustics, Chinese Academy of Sciences were presented at the opening ceremony and the conference session.
Most well-known experts and scholars on Shallow Water Acoustics in China and overseas had a very active response to the conference. About 100 delegates from USA, Canada, Russia, Australia, Italy, China etc., attended the conference and 69 papers were presented.
The fundament research on Shallow Water Acoustics is one of the most active and challenging areas in underwater acoustics. The technical topics of SWAC’09 include propagation, geo-acoustic inversion, signal processing, reverberation and target scattering, etc.
With the careful preparation and hard efforts of the organizers, these 69 high-level papers presented the latest progress, results and highlights in above-mentioned technical topics. Especially, many young researchers from China presented their research work at the conference, which had left a deep impression on the foreign experts and scholars about the research status quo and prospects on Shallow Water Acoustics in China. During the conference, many experts from the foreign famous research institutions showed their strong willingness to cooperate, which offered a good opportunity to the researchers in China for the international exchanges and cooperation in the future.
The 1st International Conference on Shallow Water Acoustics held in Beijng in 1997. 12 years later, the 2nd International Conference on Shallow Water Acoustics held in China again. There are only less than 2 months left after the conference was approved in China and USA. However, with the great efforts of many institutions and organizations, the conference was successfully held. These institutions and organizations are (listed in NO particular order):
