Ultrasonic Physics and Testing Lab held the 5th academic salon on Jun.5 in Room 501 of Dezhao Building. Sun Jian and Su Chang gave two reports titled "Virtual Instrument and LabVIEW" and "Ultrasonic Imaging Theory", respectively.

Report1: Virtual Instrument and LabVIEW

Virtual instrument is a kind of modularized hardware with high performance, which can be led by software to implement various tasks, such as test, measurement and atomization. Generally speaking, virtual instrument consists of 3 components, namely, effective software, modularized I/O hardware and a platform to combine the hardware and software. Compared to the traditional device, it occupies the superiorities like higher performance, flexible expansibility, fewer R&D time, high integration and so on.

LabVIEW (Laboratory Virtual instrument Engineering) is a package from National Instruments Corp (NI) originally developed to provide a graphical user interface to instruments connected by the IEEE 488 (GPIB) bus. It has powerful graphical editing facilities for defining and interconnecting "virtual instruments".

Report2: Ultrasonic Imaging Theory

In the first part, the speaker introduced the general method for ultrasonic imaging and its classification. Starting from the basic theory of pulsed ultrasonic imaging, the speaker talked about the different types of ultrasonics and definition of Doppler ultrasound and ultrasonic CT combining the application of ultrasonics in non-destructive testing and medical diagnosis.

In the second part, the speaker introduced the method and process of ultrasonic phased array imaging used in casing measuring.

The two reports obtained warm applause from the audience and a warm discussion was followed.
