In order to active the academic atmosphere and promote the communication between the different groups in the lab, Ultrasonic Physics and Testing Lab held the academic salon on Feb.27 in Dezhao building. This salon was the second activity in the whole series, also the first one in 2009, so it was popular with all the researcher and postgraduate in the lab.
The fist speaker was Chen Qiuqing, a postgraduate in the institute. The title of her report was "Finite element method and ANSYS". There were two parts in her report: in the first part, she introduced some basic knowledge about the finite element method, like unit, node, degree of freedom and so on in order to let the audience have a general idea about the method; in the second part, combining her practical research, she described the practical application situation of ANSYS, a software developed on the basis of finite element method.
The second speaker was Wang Xin. His report's title is "Different methods, same results of Mathematics and Engineering -- Study on finite element method". He briefly introduced the development history of finite element method. First of all, he presented the way to solve detailed problem by finite element method through showing some simplified models and flash. Then, he talked about his thoughts of using the finite element method to handle the problem in electronic logging. He also shared his own understanding of finite difference method, finite element method and boundary element method in the report.
The salon lasted for two hours. A warm discussion followed the two wonderful reports. All the attendants said they benefitted a lot from the reports and they were eager for the next activity.
