2008 National Academic Conference on Acoustics convened in Shanghai from Oct. 22 to 24, 2008. The theme of the conference is Innovation and Harmony -- Acoustics in New Ages. 385 experts and scholars around the country in acoustic field attended this grand event. The leaders of Chinese Academy of Sciences and National Natural Science Foundation of Science presented at the conference and delivered speeches.

All together, the organizing committee received 333 papers, among them 276 were collected in the conference proceeding. These papers nearly covered all branches of acoustic study, such as physical acoustics, underwater acoustics, ultrasonics, quantum acoustics, acoustic physical effect, acoustic logging, noise, noise effect and control, structure and architectural acoustics, acoustics of speech and sound communication, physiological and psychological acoustics, sound measuring, method and device of signal processing and analysis, sound transducer and so on.

After a brief opening ceremony, 3 well-known experts were invited to give plenary lectures. In the lecture titled "Problems on underwater acoustics", Academician Yang Shier introduced the importance of research on underwater acoustics and its main progress in recent years. He also pointed out we were still far behind compared to the international colleges in the research of underwater acoustics in depth and width. In the lecture titled "Advances in acoustics of speech", Prof. Yan Yonghong expatiated the significance of linguistic acoustics from several aspects, like the production, propagation, perception and processing of speech. He said the as the development of computers, artificial intelligence and digital signal processing, the human-computer interaction technology based on speech and language would play a more and more important role in modern human being's daily life. In the lecture titled "Near-field acoustic imaging -- Scanning electron acoustic microscopy and Scanning Probe microscope acoustic microscopy", Prof. Qian Menglu illustrated that it was easier to use sound wave for imaging to observe the structure and characteristics of the materials. He also mentioned as the main method of nondestructive testing, acoustic imaging had been widely used in the related industry. All these lectures benefited the audience a lot.

During the conference, the organizing committee also unveiled the results for the first "Ma Dayou Acoustic Award". Prof. Liu Ke of CAS Institute of Acoustics and Prof. Cheng Jianchun of Institute of Acoustics, Nanjing University shared the honor this year.
