Dr. T. C. Yang from the National Sun Yat-sen University (Taiwan) gave a lecture named “Data-based source localization by synthetic beamforming the moving source data and the system implications” in IOA on July 13, 2015.

In his lecture, Dr. Yang introduced the background and answered the question “why did applications of Matched Field Processing fail”. He proposed a data-based matched-mode source localization method for a moving source, using mode wavenumbers and depth functions estimated directly from the data. It did not require any environmental acoustic information and assume any propagation model. Besides, the proposed method had a potential to estimate the source range and depth for real data. It was also free of the environmental mismatch problem.

Dr. Yang’s researches aroused broad interests from the audiences and were followed by heated discussions.

Dr. Yang’s current research focuses on environmental impacts on underwater acoustic communications and networking, exploiting the channel physics to characterize and improve performance, and environmental acoustic sensing and signal processing issue. Dr. Yang is a fellow of the Acoustical Society of America.
